On many Ghanaian construction sites, when concrete becomes difficult to work with, the quickest solution is often:
“Add small water.”
Unfortunately, that “small water” can eventually mean lower strength, higher porosity, increased water penetration, and less durable concrete.
A better approach is to use a superplasticizer (what the locals call “concrete hardner”), such as SikaPlast®-2120.
What does SikaPlast®-2120 do?
SikaPlast®-2120 is added to concrete to improve its workability without simply increasing the amount of water in the mix.
This means concrete can become easier to mix, place, spread, and compact while maintaining a lower water-to-cement ratio.
For the Ghanaian contractor, mason, or concrete gang, this can translate into:
✅ Better Workability – Concrete flows and places more easily, especially around reinforcement.
✅ Reduced Water Demand – Instead of continuously adding water to make concrete workable, the admixture provides the required plasticity.
✅ Better Compaction – More workable concrete can properly surround reinforcement and fill formwork, helping reduce voids and honeycombing.
✅ Higher Potential Strength – When water is reduced while cement content remains appropriate, the lower water-cement ratio can contribute to stronger, denser concrete.
✅ Reduced Water Permeability – Denser, properly compacted concrete with fewer interconnected pores, is less susceptible to water penetration.
✅ Better Concrete Finish – Improved placement and compaction can produce more uniform concrete surfaces.
How Much SikaPlast®-2120 Should You Use?
Sika Ghana recommends approximately 0.8%–2.0% of the weight of cement/binder, with trial mixes used to establish the appropriate dosage for the particular concrete mix.
For example, for one 50 kg bag of cement:
0.8% = 0.40 kg of SikaPlast®-2120
1.0% = 0.50 kg
1.5% = 0.75 kg
2.0% = 1.00 kg
Since the product density is approximately 1.06 kg/L, this corresponds roughly to 0.38–0.94 litres per 50 kg bag of cement, depending on the selected dosage.
How Should It Be Added?
SikaPlast®-2120 can be introduced into the mixing water before it enters the concrete or added directly into freshly mixed concrete, where the plasticizing effect can be more pronounced.
Do not pour it directly onto dry cement or dry aggregates, as this can reduce its efficiency. Allow sufficient mixing time for uniform distribution throughout the concrete.
The Important Lesson for Every Contractor –
- Workable concrete does not have to mean watery concrete.
- Every extra bucket of uncontrolled water changes the water-cement ratio and can compromise the concrete you worked hard to produce.
- Using a properly dosed superplasticizer such as SikaPlast®-2120 allows you to pursue what good concrete should deliver:
WORKABILITY + COMPACTION + STRENGTH + DENSITY + DURABILITY
Remember, however, that an admixture can not correct poor aggregates, incorrect batching, excessive water, inadequate vibration, or poor curing.
Next time the concrete looks too stiff, don’t automatically reach for another bucket of water.
